My son was born on what was meant to be my last day at work before going on parental leave. I was on track to submit a manuscript that day, but Thomas had other ideas and entered the world 3 and a half weeks early. I had not even packed my hospital bag! Thomas’ unexpected arrival was a sign of things to come. Life as a scientist with a young child is exhilarating but also unpredictable and exhausting. In this article, I discuss some of the challenges facing parents in academia and share some strategies that have helped me to keep my research career on track, while experiencing the demands and pleasures of parenthood.
